The Cincinnati Bearcats and Memphis Tigers take to the field tonight in college football action. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have the Tigers favored by a comfortable margin to pick up the conference victory.
Offensively Memphis has been lights out this season, ranking fifth in the country with 54 points per game. The Tigers own a power conference win over Kansas on the road (it’s still a road win, even at Kansas) by almost five touchdowns and they also beat Bowling Green last week on the road as well. The Tigers are double-digit favorites over Cincinnati in this game; the Bearcats have been OK offensively as well, averaging over 38 points per game themselves.
Cincinnati has wins over Alabama A&M and Miami (OH). Gunner Kiel has thrown for a ton of yards and five TDs so far, but the Bearcats have also turned it over quite a bit. Kiel has thrown four picks to date, Cincinnati ranks dead last in the country (128th) in turnover differential this year at -8, which is horrendous. Turn it over against Memphis and the Bearcats are bound to fall behind and really face an uphill battle. The Tigers, incidentally, are even on the year in turnover differential.
Kiel has been listed as day-to-day as he’s been dealing with a head injury this week in practice. Head coach Tommy Tuberville wouldn’t say specifically whether or not he would start but said there was a good chance he’ll play.
Memphis is probably the best team in the American Athletic Conference, though Temple has certainly opened some eyes this year. The Tigers have gotten great quarterback play from Paxton Lynch, averaging almost 11 yards per attempt and six scores so far. The Tigers have yet to throw an interception among the three signal callers that have taken time under center and the team has already rushed for 12 touchdowns as well.
Cincinnati is getting a lot of points here as well, but with how efficient Memphis has been this year, it’s tough to see them slowing down. The Bearcats are still the best team Memphis has played to date.
