The No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs open the 2015 college football season taking on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road. The game is scheduled for an 9:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the college football odds for the game have the Horned Frogs favored to pick up the win on the road.
TCU has the potential to play for a national championship this season, but can they survive their schedule? The Horned Frogs have a tough one here tonight as well as road games at Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma on the docket. With an amazing offense capable of scoring at will this year, will the defense be good enough to show up consistently? The Frogs scored an average of 46.5 points per game last year, good for second best in the country. The defense was certainly solid, allowing 19 points a game — but they return only five starters.
Minnesota had a great 2014 by their standards, going 8-5 under head coach Jerry Kill. He's guided the Gophers from a three-win team to three straight bowl games. This year's starter at quarterback will once again be Mitch Leidner. The junior offers a dual-threat option, but there's not a lot of experience coming back for the Golden Gophers on the offensive side of the football. Outside of Leidner, only three offensive linemen come back as starters as the skill position guys are all going to be first-year go-to guys.
The Gopher defense brings back seven starters from a year ago, but they are going to be tested early against one of the best offenses in the country. TCU has a Heisman contender in Trevone Boykin and flashy tailback Aaron Green solidifies a stable of backs that could have big seasons as well.
As much as Minnesota has improved, the Frogs come in with national championship contentions and one of the best offenses in the country. The Gophers might be able to keep it close, but TCU is going to win the contest.
