The West Virginia Mountaineers welcome in the Oklahoma Sooners in college football action on Saturday. Oklahoma, playing on the road, is certainly on upset alert in this game, but the college football odds have them favored to get it done.
The fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners take to the road in college football action on Saturday when they play the West Virginia Mountaineers. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have the Sooners favored on the road by a touchdown in this one.
This is the one game many have circled as having the biggest possible upset alert. Oklahoma, ranked fourth in the country, hits the road to take on a West Virginia team that has played well this season. The Mountaineers gave Alabama a game to open the season before picking up back-to-back wins over Towson and Maryland. The Terps made a pretty good comeback against the Mountaineers in that one, but West Virginia kicked a field goal as time expired to pick up the win.
This could be a very high scoring game as these teams are averaging a combined 83 points per contest so far this season. Oklahoma, though, has the better defense between the schools. The Sooners have given up an average of only 11 points per game with Louisiana Tech scoring the most points against them this season at 16 in the season opener. Oklahoma has looked great on both sides of the football this season, but the defense certainly will have to play well in order to stay on pace with West Virginia.
The Mountaineers have cashed all three tickets against Oklahoma, posting a 3-0 ATS record against the Sooners.
Clint Trickett has had a big season and could lead West Virginia to a very good campaign. A big win over Oklahoma in this contest would certainly help the Mountaineers case this season. West Virginia plays at a really quick pace and Trickett has done a great job of moving them down the field this year. He's got a year under his belt in the system, which is huge for the Mountaineers in their current system.
This is a huge opportunity for the West Virginia football program. Hosting a team like Oklahoma, which just drilled SEC team Tennessee last week, on a Saturday night on national television is a big deal.
The Sooners will need Trevor Knight to play well. He's had a good season to date, completing 60 percent of his passes and tossing for big yards. But he does have a couple of interceptions this season, which has to improve. Turning it over against a team like West Virginia could put the Sooners behind in what could be a score-for-score type of game.
But if it comes down to special teams, the edge definitely swings to Oklahoma. Kicker Michael Hunnicutt has made all 17 extra points this season while missing just a single field goal this season. Look for the Sooners to out-last the Mountaineers in this one. This should be a great game to watch with Oklahoma finding a way to get it done. They're just too good of a football team.
