The Detroit Lions hit the road to take on the Carolina Panthers in NFL football action Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have Carolina favored at home in this one.
Carolina will get quarterback Cam Newton back on the sidelines for this one. He's one of the best stars in the league and obviously makes the Panthers a better team when he's on the field. Last week they still picked up a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as Derek Anderson had a huge game. Detroit's front seven is going to be a step up from what Tampa Bay brought, however.
Newton called out the Lions' front seven, which should allow them to have some motivation coming into this one. Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley will look to shoulder the load for the Lions up front and cause problems for the Carolina running game and Newton. Detroit's defense played well on Monday night, beating the Giants pretty good. They forced two turnovers and picked up a couple of sacks. This defense is a lot better and with a coach like Jim Caldwell running the show and demanding respect and discipline from his players, the Lions have a chance to excel.
Offensively Detroit had no problems on Monday, either. Matthew Stafford threw the ball 32 times for 346 yards and two scores. Detroit didn't turn the football over, which was huge for them. They got Calvin Johnson involved early and were able to run the football as well.
The Lions are looking to take that next step to becoming an elite team in the NFL. The first step to that, this season, is winning on the road against a good Carolina team.
