The Arizona Cardinals head east in NFL Football action today when they take on the New York Giants. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have the Cardinals listed as the small favorite to pick up a win.
Arizona is getting a lot of attention and love in this one. They're flying across the country to play in the dreaded early East coast time slot and they're playing off a short week as well. But both the Giants and Cardinals played on Monday night on the road, so both teams are battling the short week. There's a bit of a surprise that Arizona is laying points here on the road, but they were very good last season when playing on the road, sporting an against the number record of 6-2 while away from their own building. They didn't cover the field goal they were laying in San Diego in their opener, however.
The Giants did not look good on either side of the football in their opening game. Eli Manning and the offense sparingly moved the football against Detroit. He threw for only 163 yards and a touchdown while the Giants were awful running the football, totaling only 53 yards on the ground on 22 carries. With the Cardinal defense coming into this one looking to have an impact, the Giants are going to have to find a way to move the football down the field. Manning to Victor Cruz has worked in the past and he can stretch a defense, but it won't be easy against a Cardinal team that sports a pretty solid secondary.
New York's new short-passing attack didn't work well, but maybe another week will help. The West Coast style of moving the ball in theory should work, but if defenses tackle well the Giants just aren't going to be scary when they have the football.
With the Cardinals being favored on the road, in the early kickoff slot, it's tough to back the Giants here. Arizona is a gritty team with Carson Palmer leading the way and he can be very good at times. Palmer should be able to have a big game today, especially if the Giants aren't able to get any pressure on him.
UPDATE: Palmer will not be playing in today's game. Rather, Drew Stanton will get the start at quarterback. Their key to success will be feeding the ball to Larry Fitzgerald.
