The Cy-Hawk rivalry continues in college football action Saturday when the Iowa Hawkeyes welcome in the Iowa State Cyclones. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have Iowa favored in this one by double digits.
Iowa has already picked up a pair of wins this season, beating both Northern Iowa and Ball State. Both of those games were close — Iowa won by a combined 12 points and both were at home. They'll hope to avoid their first loss of the season in this rivalry contest, with the 0-2 Cyclones coming to town.
Iowa State dropped their opening game of the season to North Dakota State and lost last week to No. 20 Kansas State, a game they should have won. Iowa State lost both of those games on their own field and statistically they've been one of the worst teams in the country so far this year. The Cyclones rank just 101st in passing yards at 182.5 per game, but the running game isn't any better, collecting just 103.5 yards per game on the ground. They're allowing opponents to score an average of 33 points a game, which is good for 99th best in the nation. Ugh, Paul Rhoads must be going nuts in Ames. It doesn't bode well for the Cyclones heading into this week's game either — the team with the most rushing yards in this matchup has won each of the last eight games.
Iowa State played inspired football for Rhodes last week, narrowly losing to Kansas State. They showed some moxie in that one and played well enough to win, but simply couldn't get the job done. If they can play a second straight week of inspired football, they're going to make this one close. The 10 points is going to be tough for Iowa to lay in a rivarly game where the Cyclones absolutely are facing a must-win situation.
