The Rutgers Scarlet Knights take on the Connecticut Huskies in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPNu. Currently the odds for the game have Scarlet Knights as a small road favorite.
Neither of these teams have had the season they were hoping for, but Rutgers can become bowl eligible if they pick up a win in this game. The Scarlet Knights are just 5-5 overall and still play South Florida next week, so picking up back to back wins to end their regular season would certainly be a nice thing going forward into their bowl game.
Connecticut has had a very forgetful season. The Huskies have won only once, beating Temple last week. Hard to imagine they are flying high with a 1-9 record, but they can win this game against Rutgers. Not many people are interested in this one outside of the northeast, but it could be a battle of tough-nosed clubs.
The Huskies scored 28 second half points last week and shutout Temple in those final 24 minutes. Rutgers was on fire at one point this season, starting 4-1 before coming apart at the seams. The Scarlet Knights have won just once since early October and that was over — yep, Temple.
The Scarlet Knights have not been scoring much lately. In their last five games Rutgers has put up just 16.2 points per game after averaging a whole bunch the first month of the season. They should be able to score points against a Connecticut defense that allows opponents to put up 34 points per game.
Connecticut will probably score some points as well. They have been pedestrian all season, averaging just 17 points per contest. But Rutgers gives up more than 32 points per game themselves. Neither team should be able to stop the other from doing whatever they want. Although that's probably not going to be a whole lot, either.
