A battle in Big Ten Football on Saturday will see the Penn State Nittany Lions take on the Wisconsin Badgers. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have Wisconsin favored at home by 24 points.
Wisconsin won't play in the Big Ten title game for the first time in awhile, but they still have an outside shot of making it to a BCS game. That quest begins with a game here against Penn State at home. The Badgers lost early in the season to Arizona State and Ohio State but have managed to string together six straight wins.
Penn State is having a pretty solid season as well and this will be their final game of the season. Remember, the Nittany Lions are in the second of the school's four-year bowl ban. They're 6-5 on the season and a loss would put them without a winning season, so we expect them to compete at a high level in this contest.
Bill O'Brien's group might struggle a bit in this one, though. They haven't won a true road game yet this season and they've been blown out of several games on the road this year. Zach Zwinyak has been running the football better, but the Wisconsin defense has been damn good in recent weeks. Last week the only points they gave up to a solid running team in Minnesota was an interception return for a touchdown.
The Badgers have some revenge in this game as well. Penn State picked up a 24-21 victory in this contest last year, which ended a nightmare season in Happy Valley. That was one way to end the season on a high note and the Nittany Lions were able to head into the off-season with positive vibes. But this year it will be certainly an uphill battle.
With Melvin Gordon and James White on the field, Wisconsin is hard to beat. The running duo has combined for better than 2,600 yards and 25 rushing touchdowns this season. And the Wisconsin defense is very solid as well, but might not get a whole lot of credit. Even against some tough competition this season the Badgers are giving up just 13.4 points per game, which is good for one of the ten best scoring defenses in the country.
We will take the team with the better defense and great running backs. They should steamroll over the Nittany Lions.
