A pair of struggling SEC clubs meet on Thursday night in college football action when the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have Mississippi State favored by double digits.
This has snoozefest written all over it. Kentucky is the proverbial "this is a practice" opponent in the SEC and Mississippi State hasn't been able to figure themselves out just yet. But it's still SEC football on a Thursday night, it could be worse.
Wildcat QB Max Smith is pushing the team down the field, averaging 7.2 yards per pass attempt this season. They run a quick tempo offensive and do look much better with the football compared to last year. The Wildcats LOOK like they know what they're doing but the execution just isn't there. As far as time of possession goes, the Wildcats average just 25:57 per contest, which is not great when you're looking to get wins.
Kentucky just ran through the gauntlet of opponents, getting beat up by Louisville, Florida, South Carolina and Alabama in consecutive weeks. Ouch. Three of those defenses are ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Each team is coming off a bye week. Kentucky has covered just three of their last 14 games overall and in their last game against Alabama were out-gained by 500 yards. Just awful.
Will Kentucky be able to harness those last four games and put up some type of solid effort tonight? We don't think so. In addition to that, Dan Mullen would probably get fired on the spot if he lost to Kentucky.
So there we have it, a middle of the road SEC contest between two teams in certain need of a win. We like Mississippi State because they have more weapons than Kentucky does. Or at least it seems that way. Remember, the Bulldogs entered the regular season as a team getting some votes in the polls. Now, seven weeks later, they need a win against Kentucky to possibly save their season.
And not to mention they should probably concentrate pretty hard on getting this victory. The next four games for the Bulldogs? At South Carolina, at Texas A&M, Alabama at home and then a trip to take on Arkansas. Gotta get one now.
