The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins will conclude the first round of NFL playoff action when they collide at FedEX Field in Landover, Maryland later this afternoon. Start time in today’s meeting between the Seahawks and Redskins is set for 4:30pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on FOX. Updated NFL Playoffs Odds are favoring Russell Wilson and company at -3 against the spread. Washington is drawing +125 moneyline odds as a home underdog and the game total is coming in at 46 points.
The Seahawks were long considered a ‘play at home, fade on the road’ outfit, but this year’s team has proven to be a different sort of animal. Seattle looked its usual part early on, dropping four of its first five road games while going 3-0 at home; however, the season’s second half showed its true potential.
Pete Carroll’s crew won seven of their last eight games and among those victories were road wins at Chicago and Buffalo. The Seahawks also closed out the season on a five game win streak that saw them average 38.6 points per game while limiting their opposition to just 12 points per contest.
For those reasons Seattle finds itself in the rare role of laying points on the road. Another factor in the line, though, is the health of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin turned in a gutty effort opposite Dallas in Washington’s regular season finale, but his mobility was obviously hampered by the knee injury he sustained in a week 14 showdown with Baltimore.
Griffin still tallied 63 yards and one touchdown, but running back Alfred Morris shouldered most of the load, rushing for 200 yards and three scores on 33 touches.
Suffice it to say Griffin and Morris will come no where near those totals today. Seattle’s defense, which ranked fourth in yards per game allowed and first in points per game allowed, will make life more difficult for Griffin and his backfield mate, forcing Washington into far more passing situations than it faced last weekend (Griffin 9-of-18 for 100 yards against Dallas).
While Griffin is a capable passer, the Redskins offensive strength is built around an option style rushing attack that forces teams to account for both Griffin and Morris.
