One of football’s most storied rivalries will experience, perhaps, it’s most watered down version yet as the 2-11 Kansas City Chiefs square off against the 3-10 Oakland Raiders at the O.co Coliseum. The Kansas City Chiefs responded to the tragic events of three weeks ago by turning in their best performance of the season. KC topped a visiting Panthers squad 27-21 to earn its second win of the season. The Chiefs held the ball for over 37 minutes and quarterback Brady Quinn looked un-Quinn-like, completing 19-of-23 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns in beating Carolina.
With a week for the murder-suicide of one of their own to sink in, Kansas City looked like its usual self last weekend, falling to the Browns 30-7 in Cleveland. Despite the poor showing against an improved Browns team, the Chiefs could be in line for another atypical performance with the Raiders on tap.
Oakland has lost six straight games and most of those were in blowout fashion as it fell by an average of 17.7 points per game. The Raiders have played a little bit better the last two weeks, losing 20-17 and 26-13 at home to the Browns and Broncos respectively, but they have shown few signs of snapping out of what has become an extended funk.
With two teams playing this poorly, it is difficult to back either squad; however, the Raiders at -3 are even more difficult to swallow. Kansas City has won eight times in its last nine trips to Oakland and the lone loss in that stretch was a 20-23 overtime setback in 2010.
Free Pick: Take the Over 44. Neither of these teams are lighting it up offensively, but they should find some success against each other. Kansas City has faced a top 10 defense in four of its last six games so Oakland’s 30th ranked unit ought to serve as a nice reprieve.
