My, what a difference three or four games make. The Heisman Trophy favorites list has been altered drastically since the college football season officially kicked off a few weeks ago. The latest 2012 Heisman Trophy Odds feature West Virginia’s Geno Smith as the new favorite to win the award. The senior quarterback is drawing -125 moneyline odds ($125 wins $100) while former front runner Matt Barkley is listed at +1200 odds (down from +385) to take home the coveted prize.
Several top preseason candidates, including Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones, and Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson are no longer on the board at offshore bookmaker TheGreek.com. Those three opened the season at +500, +650, and +650 odds, respectively, to win the Heisman Trophy.
Meanwhile, more than a few dark horse contenders have either shot up the odds leader board or made their way on it with strong early season performances. Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein went from +5000 odds at season’s open to +2000 while Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas opened the season at +2000 Heisman odds and is now a +500 play. Florida State’s E.J. Manuel is another big mover, going from +3000 odds to +300.
Count Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater (+3000) and UCLA’s Jonathan Franklin (+3000) among those who were not listed on The Greek’s early board but who are now featured prominently in the latest odds.
