The NFL Preseason gets underway coming up on Sunday with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The opening game of the 2012-13 NFL season pits the Arizona Cardinals against the New Orleans Saints. The game is scheduled for an 8:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the NFL Network. Currently the odds for the game have the Saints favored by 2.5 points for the game.
Free Preview: Well, here we are, just six days away from the opening of the 2012-13 NFL Season. The Saints are favored in this game despite not having head coach Sean Payton for the entire season. They're projected to win at least 10 games this season, which is still a decent option for them when you have a quarterback like Drew Brees. The Saints essentially have built an offensive style of football where they outscore everyone and attempt to hang points on the board during every possession. That's obviously the idea for each and every NFL team when they play, but the Saints have done a decent job doing that the past few seasons. The projected total for this game is being set at 35 points by the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Hilton), who also has the Saints as a less than a field goal favorite for the game. That seems like a pretty decent spread with everything that is going into the game. It's really hard to tell one way or another who has an edge in this game because in reality, it's just an extra practice, but against a team on the other side of the ball that's not on your team. This is an NFC battle against two of the teams that can score a lot of points. The Cardinals were a pretty decent team last season, going 8-8 overall and taking second place in the NFC West behind the surprising 13-3 San Fransisco 49ers, who made it all the way to the NFC Championship game. There isn't going to be a lot of star power in this contest as it's only the first game of the preseason and neither of the teams want to get their stars hurt. These games in the early part of the NFL preseason are all about the third and fourth string guys looking to make the team and potentially find a roster spot.
Free Pick: Hard to go against the Saints in this game, because they're a team that probably should win with their depth on offense, but it's almost impossible to know which team is going to have advantages in this game. The early pre-season games are obviously all about just getting on the field and getting the season underway. I think points will be at a premium in this game and the under actually looks a bit decent. To think the first game of the year will have each team in double digits is a bit of a stretch, I think. The under seems like the best option.
