MLB Sunday Chicago Cubs at St Louis Cardinals: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

St. Louis Cardinals Vs. Chicago Cubs 7/22/12: Mitch's Free MLB Baseball Pick

Sunday afternoon baseball and we will see the Chicago Cubs take on the St Louis Cardinals in game 3 of their 3 game series from St Louis. The game is scheduled for a 2:15 (ET) pm start time and it will be televised live on  WGN (Chicago) and FSM (St. Louis). Currently the odds have St Louis favored at -200, while Chicago is dogs of +187. The total for the game sits at 8.5 runs.

Free Analysis: The Chicago Cubs have had a rough season but they looked to be improving before falling flat on their face in the first two games of this series, getting outscored by a 16-1 count. Having a bad inning is one thing. Allowing an opponent to tie franchise and major-league records along the way is far more alarming. The Chicago Cubs hope to bounce back from Saturday's nightmarish seventh inning, in which they allowed 12 runs, - and avoid a sweep in St Louis today. For today's game Chicago starts Travis Wood. Wood has made large strides in his first season with the Cubs, lowering his ERA and WHIP considerably while limiting opposing hitters to a .222 average. Yet, the 25-year-old has been alarmingly homer-prone - and it cost him in his last outing, as he surrendered a pair of home runs while getting tagged for eight runs over 4 2/3 innings against the Miami Marlins. That ended a personal four-game winning streak, but Wood comes into Sunday's finale with a 2-0 record and 2.33 ERA in three career starts against St. Louis. The Cardinals matched the league record with seven doubles en route to a 12-run seventh frame that matched the club mark for most offense in a single inning. That accounted for all the scoring as the Cardinals remained five games behind the Cincinnati Reds for top spot in the National League Central. They send 11-game winner Lance Lynn to the mound in the series finale, hoping he'll build off a seven-inning, 10-strikeout performance last time out. Three straight subpar outings have given way to back-to-back gems from Lynn, who settled for a no-decision against the Brewers six days ago despite allowing just one run on seven hits. The burly 25-year-old has been sensational against the Cubs in his career, going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in three appearances, including a pair of starts. Both of his victories came back in April, when he limited Chicago to just two runs in 13 1/3 innings over two starts. The Cardinals hadn't scored 12 runs in an inning since 1926, and no team in baseball had stroked seven doubles in a frame since the Boston Bees accomplished the feat in 1936. St. Louis is 6-1 in their last seven home games, 5-2 in their last seven games against a left handed starter, and 8-1 in Lynn’s last nine starts against the N.L. Central. Chicago has the 2nd worst road record in the league at 14-34.

Free Pick: I won the first two games of this series on the Cards and will come right back with the here, but this time it will be on the RL (+105). The Pirates and Reds keep winning and the Cards know that they can't afford to lose games vs the 2nd worst road team in the league. Last night St Louis won 12-0 and the day before they won 4-1. In their last 1o road losses the Cubs have been outscored by at least 2 runs in each of those games. The Cubs struggle to score on the road (3.58 rpg) and it won't get easier vs Lance Lynn today. Lynn is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA at home and he has allowed just 1 ER in his last two starts overall. Lance has faced the Cubs twice this year and the Cards won both games 5-1. Travis wood is pitching well and has good numbers vs the Cards (3-0 in teams starts with a 2.32 ERA), but the Cards offense is fully healthy and clicking right now, plus they hit lefties at a .304 clip and score 6.05 rp/9 off of them at home. This should be another easy win by St Louis.
