The Belmont Stakes is a 1-1/2 mile thoroughbred horse race held every June and is called racings “Test of the Champion’’ due to being the longest race a thoroughbred will run. Belmont Park is located in Elmont, New York and was inaugurated in 1867. Only the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Oaks has higher
attendance in North America for a stakes race. The race itself is left-handed with 12 furlongs (1-1/2 mile) on a dirt surface and is for qualifying 3-year-olds meeting the colt/gelding of 126 lbs (57.2 kg) and for a filly of 121 lbs. (54.9 kg). Five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three after the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont is not only the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, but the oldest. Horse racing historians love to point out Secretariat’s 31-length victory in the 1973 Belmont Stakes made
him the 9th horse to capture the Triple Crown after establishing the
world record for a mile and a half on dirt 31-length victory at 2:24.
