Preakness Stakes is a 1-3/16 mile thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, held on the third Saturday in May at Pimlico. Colts carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg). Black-eyed Susans are traditionally placed around the winner's neck. Only the Kentucky Derby typically achieves a bigger attendance. The first Preakness during its first-ever spring race meet in 1873, with a winning purse of $2,050. For 15 years late the race was run at Coney Island, New York. Magna Entertainment Corp., which owns Pimlico, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Maryland Legislature approved a plan to purchase the Pimlico course if Magna Entertainment cannot secure a buyer. And as even casual horse bettors know, the Preakness is the second leg of Horse Racing’s Triple Crown.
