Uncle Mo is slang in the world of sports for "momentum", which is fitting for this horse who clocked a 108 Beyer Rating in a victory at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Todd Pletcher is considered one of the top trainers in the horse racing world and is looking to repeat his win at the Kentucky Derby last year (after an 0-24 Derby run) when his horse Super Saver won the "The Run for the Roses".
Despite being called the "best of generation" by his trainer, Uncle Mo will need to over-come multiple obstacles to win the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby. First, will he even race this Saturday after owner Mike Repole stated he would skip the race if his horse has not fully recovered from a gastrointestinal infection? Second, outside of Gato Del Sol in 1982, dating back to pre-1900 there has been no horse starting in the 18th post position who has went on to win the Derby.
Between the infection and the lackluster performance at the Wood, it is difficult to back Uncle Mo in the Kentucky Derby. With such a large field and a history of surprises, to put your money behind a horse who might not even race has us passing on this Kentucky Derby Contender.
