Very solid question, and I hesitate to answer a little bit, because people view things a little differently than I do.
I m going to answer the question, and make people do a little research of what I say.
Usually first base is the slam dunk position of the infield. Usually you can get a guy who hits nearly 300, 400 obp, 30 HR and 100 RBI with nearly 100 runs.......In years past you could name half the first baseman in baseball and you could expect to be right. Look a little closer. Between, age, injury, and changing leagues.........I ll say this, the number ISNT half
At 2nd base.......its Robinson Cano, Dustin Pedroia........then its a huge drop to Uggla, Kinsler and Phillips.............then its everybody else.
At SS.......Its Tulo..................down to Reyes..............I dont see much difference between 3-13
3b is my hated position.........Anyone can make a top 10 list of third baseman and I can give you a compelling argument on why NOT to choose that player. In my drafts, I might make my 3rd baseman my last overall pick in my draft. If anyone wants to play that game, I will gladly oblige.
OF.........plenty of talent and depth.........sometimes you have to look hard though.
Pitching.......You can never have enough pitching in real baseball, but beyond the obviously, there is a lot of value out there if you know where to look.
Catching. There are a few superstars at this position, but there are a lot of catchers that can you something positive, and that wasnt true a few years ago. JP Arrbencibia might hit 220 this season, but you can get him for a late round pick and he could hit 25 homers.........again providing value.
In summary, there are fewer guaranteed superstars then ever before. But if you do your homework and are smart on draft day.........there is more talent than ever before if you piecemeal it together.
In closing.......here is my motto that I live and win by. In real baseball, you can never have enough pitching.........In fantasy baseball, you can never have enough power. Power is the trait that can help you the most, and people are always trying to trade for it during the season. That is as big a given as death and taxes.
Hope this helps, keep firing away
