What is a McCarver? That's a Scott Spreitzer-ism that means a stat that is really used just to fill time.
Andy feels that one stat is First Downs. Some times this can be a misleading stat. If a team hits an 80 yard bomb then they they got all those yards in one play and took away 7 or 8 potential first downs. If you are outfirstdown in a game it doesn't really mean you were outplayed.
Time of possession is another Misleading stat in both the NFL. A team may be on the short end of the stick in TOP, but still win the game because they were more efficient with the time that they did have the ball.
Yards gained and Yards allowed can also be misleading as it really doesn't give a true reflection of how a game is played some times.
Andy likes the Yards per play stat, because it is a measure of efficiency rather than going by the raw stats.
