Growing up watching sports as a kid i looked up to the stars in the league. Same goes for the guys who played very hard and the players in college who had the talent to make it to the next level. I had more jerseys than i can remember, and more baseball cards that i could fit in my closet. Today i often wonder if kids idolize players like we did back then. Do they even collect cards today? Do the parents even let the youngster watch the TV set or is Maury Povich just on demand 24 hrs a day. What do you tell your child who loves sports and his favorite player is Aaron Hernandez? It seems the youth in sports has been lost for the most part. Today's stars seem to be all about money and star power. They seem to forget who is really watching them. I don't remember seeing things back then like i do today regarding sports figures. First time i noticed the flash and money being taken to the next level was from Deion Sanders. Granted i think it was good for the sport of football, but it's gone to far today. Most of us read the papers and watch ESPN and scroll through the internet on twitter and things of that nature because we love sports. One thing I've noticed over the last 10 years. My hometown news on tv and newspapers has been overtaken by crime related segments and articles. I don't even watch the news today or read the newspaper because that's all it is. Most sports outlets are getting to be the same way. The players today are just far worse than those in the 70's and 80's. Crime after crime, day after day, college and pro. The sad part is, it's the stars that are doing this. I could understand if it was a practice squad member who would never hit the newspapers. Ray Rice is the most recent story that bothers me. Texas longhorns just kicked 4 more players off the team. Maybe it's just me but i think between college and pro they need to set up a daycare. These players today are out of control. If you could pick 5 players to idolize who would they be...have they been in the news for negative reasons? Do they have star power?
