For those of you haters that can't stand your own existence, please don't go any further. I'm not into your negative comments so only those that are interested continue...
'Back to good old rock n roll...
'Sometimes I feel the urge to just start typing, I know I am no Hemingway but for some strange reason, I feel like I have something to share. When that feeling overcomes me I have to stop all I'm doing and start "chicken pecking" (two fingers) on the keyboard. 'Keep in mind that I got a "B" in Mr Pipkin's 10th grade English class @ Carson High and 30 wpm (typing) @ Stephen White J H in my earlier years... but here goes!
I don't recall the exact year but it was 1972 or 73, it's not that I'm lazy but the fact is the exact dates are hard to come by. I'll leave that up to those that are much more astute on the computer than I. The "gig" took place at the Hollywood Palladium and the unknown ZZ Topp were 2nd billed to "Wishbone Ash". I'll never forget what took place that night...
About 5 songs into their (ZZ's) set the plug got pulled... there was darkness and nothing else except confusion filled the house for a good 5 minutes. 'Flashlights finally appeared and after 10 minutes or so and the legendary Billy Gibbons and ZZ found their way back to the stage to continue their performance. I will never forget the first words that Billy uttered after re taking the stage...
You see Billy used to sing in the dark when he was a child. His mama used to turn the lights out on him while he was still singing. When the lights returned to the Palladium floor Billy said " you can turn the lights out on me but you can NEVER stop me boogy woogying" and with that comment ZZ TOPP and Billy Gibbons continued on to greatness few bands will ever achieve.
Later that night, I had the great pleasure of meeting Frank Beard (drummer), Dusty Hill (bass player) and Billy Gibbons in their hotel rooms on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Actually, they all had their own rooms but because of a mutual friend (Tom Belhausen) I was privileged to a 'private" concert in Billy's room. Man could that guy play guitar!
'Good Luck this weekend Handicappers!
