I am a J.R. Smith fan. This deceased trainer, competed in Chicago at Arlington, Sportsman and Hawthorne and at The Fair Grounds for over 30 years plus. He wm 8 training titles at The Fair Grounds and won The Louisiana Derby with "ASK THE FARE", who if did not get injured, was well on his way to the Kentucky Derby.
He never worked a horse faster or longer than 1:02 for 5/8, or a half mile in :51. But he worked horses every 6 days, unless of course they ran. Then they resumed their schedule after walking for awhile after a race, then went back to slow works. Unlike trainers like Van Berg, Brothers and others, his horses stayed sound and they broke down more horses in the morning than anyone.
Brothers was thought to be a cinch to btrak Pulpit down, but he stayed sound miraculously. Van Berg worked his horses to dest as does Lukas and his disciples. Of cords with the good horses they get, I could tain those. Lukas and all his disciples in my pinion were all over rated and Pletcher is the worst. He breaks down more horses, but you just never hear about those. His horses ought to be fit. If they can't take it, they go to "the killers" at some stock yard. JMO.
