A very tough way to lose the World Series, 4 games to 1, having had the lead thru 7 innings in 3 of the 4 losses and into the 9th in two of them, but blowing those leads with poor “relief” pitching and untimely errors.
I did not get to see much of the final game last nite due to a social commitment (a party hosted by good friends of ours, thus making it a “command appearance” as far as my wife was concerned), although they had the Packers-Denver game on (a surprisingly lousy game, BTW) and they were giving scoring updates for the WS game. I did see Granderson’s lead-off HR before leaving for the party, so thought the Mets would at least go on and win the game with a rested Matt Harvey on the hill pitching at home, and so was not surprised to hear that Mets were up 2-0 after 8, but was quite surprised when next saw that KC had tied it in the ninth). I did not see the ninth inning drama and ensuing collapse in that inning (although did see the ultimate collapse in the 12th), but Collins was in a very tough spot in the ninth, with Harvey making it VERY CLEAR that he did not want to risk his shut out start (thru 8) being spoiled by a closer who not only had pitched two innings the night before but had not looked all that great in the series. And the tide sure turned fast for Murphy – hero one week, “goat” the next (and in NY of all places- the best place in the world to be a sports hero, BUT the worst to be a “sports goat”).
On the bright side, it was a good ride for Mets fans until the World Series, and the Mets have built a solid, young team with some very good arms in the starting rotation, and some power with addition of Cespedes, and possibly the best all-around position player in MLB IMO in Granderson, although their captain, Wright, is a ??? for the future, with his serious spinal condition. So if their front office doesn’t screw things up, like past Mets GMs have, the Mets should be a force in the years to come, and should get another shot at winning the big one in the near future.
Signing off on this MLB forum 'til next season.
