These 1-day fantasy baseball leagues are salary cap leagues. You have a $1 million fantasy dollars to pick your roster. Stay under the cap and spend wisely.
Here are Thursday’s Value plays.
BATTERS
Studs to Start
Ben Zobrist, Rays vs. White Sox ($58,448)
Zobrist might not be a household name but he’s a fantasy stud. With his price today he’s a stud being disguised as a value play. He has a career stat line of 4 for 5 with a home run against Chris Sale, I like him to fill a spot on my roster.
Evan Longoria, Rays vs. White Sox ($74,880)
Another Ray I like today is Evan Longoria. He seems to be heating up over the last week and I look for him to take advantage of the lefty Sale much like Zobrist. If the Rays are to step up offensively Longoria needs to lead the way.
Value Plays
Vernon Wells, Yankees vs. Blue Jays ($67,600)
If you are looking for a true value play as one of your outfielders or utility play, look no further then Vernon Wells. In 47 career at-bats against Mark Buehrle he is a .489 hitter with 2 home runs and 9 RBI’s. I like those numbers and will slot him in for a spot on my squad.
Brandon Moss, A’s vs. Orioles ($71,136)
After coming out of nowhere to become a key cog in the A’s lineup, Brandon Moss has made a name for himself on the highest scoring team in the AL. He is also 3 for 4 with an RBI against expected Orioles starter Jason Hammel, so I think this is a safe bet for some production.
Bench
Brett Lawrie, Blue Jays vs. Yankees ($53,040)
Lawrie is a streaky hitter and when you take into account that he is 1 for 10 with 4 strikeouts against Hiroki Kuroda, he quickly becomes someone to bench today.
Adam LaRoche, Nationals vs. Reds ($56,368)
Who knows if LaRoche has finally seen his finer days pass him by, but he is off to a slow start in 2013 and with a 5 for 29 career batting line, which includes 5 strikeouts against Bronson Arroyo, he is a player I am avoiding today.
Michael Cuddyer, Rockies vs. Diamondbacks ($77,792)
Generally I like Cuddyer as a safe play in fantasy but today, not against D’Backs pitcher Trevor Cahill. He is 2 for 18 against him during his career and with safer and less expensive options available, stay away.
PITCHERS
Studs to Start
There are no glaring ace pitcher plays for today.
Value Plays
Edwin Jackson, Cubs vs. Marlins ($88,320)
Despite a career 1-6 record with an ERA over 6 against the Marlins during his career, I like this spot for Jackson. He has not pitched terribly during the 2013 season and the team he faces this year is not even close to as talented as the ones he has faced previously. The Marlins strike out a lot and he is a strike out arm. I like the combo and the matchup.
Garrett Richards, Angels vs. Mariners ($84,480)
Richards has pitched very well since joining the Angels rotation, including a 7-inning shutout performance of the high octane Tigers offense last weekend. He now knows he is pitching for a possible long-term spot in the Halos rotation and against a much weaker hitting team like the Mariners, I expect another solid performance from Richards.
Bench
Gio Gonzalez, Nationals vs. Reds ($105,440)
This has trap written all over it. Gonzalez may be the most talented option on the board for starting pitchers tonight, but he is certainly not the safest. After getting hit hard against the Mets over the weekend he takes on the hard-hitting Reds. He has a sparkling ERA of under 1.00 against them in his career, but for the high price, there are safer plays.
