After driving his motorcycle into a ditch, cruiserweight fighter Juan Carlos Robles recovered from a broken right kneecap, a dislocated right elbow, and a broken right forearm. But the one thing he couldn't recover from was a pinkie finger that was severely damaged. The wound wouldn't heal and threatened to stall his boxing career. Since Robles didn't have insurance, he did what any other insane person would do in his situation.
Robles grabbed a chisel and a 15-pound weight. Then he went home, put towels over the kitchen table and blocked off a working area with several two-by-fours. He put gauze around the area and twisted soldering wire around his right pinkie to slow the flow of blood.
"Then I put a wood chisel on it and dropped a 15-pound weight on the chisel," Robles said. "The piece shot out about six feet like a missile."
Robles said he needed the money from his upcoming fight. He couldn't risk missing the payday due to his injured finger so he just cut it off. However, there is no truth to the rumor that Robles is giving up his boxing career to attend medical school and become a surgeon.
Lmao, way to ping back this one from the dead...
That fight was great Matt. You are pretty much going to get your money's worth in any fight involving Gatti or Ward, that's for sure.
Thats awesome...hopefully he takes enough home from his next fight to recover somewhat...
Ronnie Lott would be proud. That's the thing I love about boxing. Some of these guys are true warriors. I was just watching a replay of Mickey Ward v. Arturo Gatti 1. If you get a chance check it out, especially the ninth round. All three of their fights were great but the first is the best. It wil bring tears to your eyes.
