Today brought back a neat memory. One of those moments nobody gives a thought to any longer but at the time it was cool. I was in high school in the summer preceding my senior year. It was fun times and didn't realize how good I had it. I was playing american legion baseball, coaching little league ball and working part time as a radio jockey with the first rock n roll show in my home town. That summer MLB was making a major production out of who would score the games one millionth run. They really promoted the hell out of it and the players all got engaged. Well it was on this date that Bob Watson of the Astros got it done at Candlestick park against the Giants. He scored from second base after a home run by Milt May. It was not your usual trot home. All players across the country knew the deal and were trying to be the guy to score it. Watson did not trot home in the usual style. There was a sense of urgency and it was funny to watch. Across the country at about the same moments Davey Conception of the Reds homered and sprinted around the bases in an attempt to be the guy. He just came up short by seconds. Watson remarked after the game that as he was rounding third he heard teammates screaming at him to run faster. It's estimated he beat Conception to the dish by about a second and a half. Watson won a $1000 Seiko watch for his efforts along with a million tootsie rolls, yes, that is correct. No he did not consume a million tootsie rolls and blow up like a blimp. he donated them to the Boy scouts. Anyway, just a neat memory and a neat summer for yours truly. I know many of us would love to step into a time machine and go back to the summer between our junior and senior years. Lot's of baseball, girls and good times. There was a lake about 30 miles north of my home town where it was pretty secluded and the college girls would come and lay out naked and sun themselves. We used to load a cooler of beer and go spend summer afternoons at the lake, the scenery was pretty amazing for a bunch of teenage boys. Good times.
Okay, a free selection. As much as I hate it I am suggesting a small play on the Phillies as they meet my Cardinals. Value play as the Cardinals are simply over priced here. Much like the cross state Royals, the Cardinals are not hitting on all cylinders yet. Not even close. Philadelphia is available at a great price, imo.
On my business end we cashed another NBA playoff featured release last night as the Heat went into Toronto and got the outright. I have my NBA Playoff Game of the Week going tonight.
That is it for today. Best of luck with your hump day action guys.
