Wildcat Red Kentucky Derby Preview, Odds

The 140th run for the roses is takes place this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby official start time is 6:24 pm ET. There are several Contenders in the event, including Wildcat Red, who has been installed as 20/1 Odds to win the Derby.

Wildcat Red’s Record: 4-3-0 in 7 Races. Trainer: Jose Garoffalo. Jockey: Luis Saez. Sire: D’wildcat. Dam: RaceneBest Beyer Speed: 101

Here is a horse that knows nothing but good results as he has 4 wins and 3 second place finishes in his 7 career races. This is one tough horse to get past through the stretch, a trait he displayed on numerous occasions this winter at Gulfstream, including in the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, a race he ultimately lost. This colt has held his form extremely well from the first of the year right through the Florida Derby at distances from seven furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. Still he has had his best success on speed-biased strip at Gulfstream Park, and there is some question as to whether he will be able to duplicate those same efforts over a different type of surface at Churchill Downs.

Wildcat Red is sired by D’wildcat, who excelled at shorter distances, posting an average win distance of about 6 1/2 furlongs. His Dam is Racene, who won at a mile or longer on turf and dirt and finished third in the Grade 3 Yerba Buena Breeders’ Cup Handicap at 11 furlongs on grass.

Wildcat Red will be run by Jockey Luis Saez, who has 64 wins in 395 starts this year so far. He is ranked 9 th in the 2014 jockey money list this year. This is the first time that Luis and Wildcat Red will be together since they teamed for a front-running victory in the $400,000 Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22.

Wildcat Red’s pedigree suggests that sprint distances may be his forte. However, he has yet to finish worse than second, with a victory in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and a game runner-up effort in the nine-furlong Florida Derby.
