Went The Day Well - Preakness Contenders 2012

Went The Day Well finished fourth overall at the Kentucky Derby. The horse has 6 to 1 odds to win the 2012 Preakness Stakes and thus is considered to be a Preakness Contender. The horse has a career mark of 4 races, two of which were wins. In the other two starts Went The Day Well did not cash for bettors, but does have a career earnings of $382,000.

The horse will start the Preakness from the fifth post on Saturday night. The 2012 Preakness Stakes start time and official post time is 6:24 pm ET this Saturday from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Went The Day Well finished fourth at the Derby and will be looking to improve on his win at the Vinery Spiral. The fast paced style at the Preakness could benefit this horse, which does a great job of closing. Of the horses that aren't big favorites, Went The Day Well could be the most serious contender of all the horses.

Jockey John Velazquez and this horse never were in the discussion for the Derby win, having lets horses such as Bodemeister blow by him and get too far ahead to make a close late. Horse experts say this horse hasn't run against top-flight competition other than in the Derby, so who knows exactly what the horse will bring? Other than Funny Cide, New York horses tend not to make an impact in major Triple Crown races.

The betting value is about right for this horse, which was 30-1 at the Derby and obviously outran those odds, finishing in the top five. While he might not win the race, Went The Day Well should be considered in most exotic plays, including trifectas and superfectas. He will run in the top half of the race and will more than likely finish in the top three or four.

Preakness Facts: Opening day at Pimlico Race Course in 1870 featured the Dinner Party Stakes that was won by a horse named Preakness. In the racetrack's spring meet of 1873, the 3-year-old stakes race was named after him and the rest is history. The first official Preakness was won by Survivor with a 10 length cushion between him and second place. This record win was not topped until 2004 when Smarty Jones took home the title by an amazing 11 lengths.
