Washington Redskins 2015 Super Bowl Odds

The Washington Redskins dealt with injuries galore last year, along with inconsistent play from RG3, on their way to a 3-13 record. Now Jay Gruden is the new HC and RG3 is healthy, so look for the Redskins to take a step forward this year. Vegas odds currently have the Redskins at +450 to win the NFC East and +5500 to win the 2015 Super Bowl. Let’s take a quick look at the Washington, along with their 2014 Schedule.

Last year the Redskin offense was ranked 23 rd in scoring, at 20.9 ppg, while also ranking 9th in total yards (369.7 ypg), 16th in passing (234.4 ypg) and 5th in rushing (135.2 ypg). Robert Griffin did not play all that well and may have come back sooner then his should have from his playoff injury the year before. Robert played under a conservative coach and really didn’t have a big play weapon to go to. This year he does with the signing of DeSean Jackson from Philadelphia, plus Jay Gruden is more of a pass oriented coach and if the skins can stretch the field then that leaves the underneath exposed, where Griffin can take advantage of with his legs. Jackson and Pierre Garcon should form a deadly downfield duo. The running game was very good last year and Alfred Morris should have another solid year, especially with as much play action Gruden will implement.  The biggest sore spot of the Skins offense last year was the OL, but they have upgraded that with the signing of Kory Lichtensteiger and the drafting of OT Morgan Moses and OG Spencer long with their 2nd and 3rd round picks in the draft. Protecting Griffin is priority one and Gruden is looking to do just that. This offense will surely put more points on the board.

Defensively the Redskins ranked 30th in points allowed (29.9 ppg), 18th in yards allowed (354.1. ypg), 20th vs the pass (243.5 ypg) and 17th vs the run (110.6 ypg). This defense was pretty much a mess last year and the Skins spent allot of time in the off-season trying to upgrade it. DC Jim Haslett is back to run his 3-4 defense and he got some new pieces to work with in the signing of DB’s Tracy Porter and Ryan Clark, plus DT Jason Hatcher. They should all mesh nicely with returning players like Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley and DeAngelo Hall. The Skins also used their first pick in the draft to take LB Trent Murphy from Stanford, plus they added depth to their secondary with 4th round pick DB Bashaud Breeland from Clemson. Much of this defense has been retooled and depth has been added, and while they should be a much better group that last year they will still go through some growing pains, especially early.

The Skins should be much improved on offense. Last year they put up some yards but also were tied for 30th in the league in turnover, so that didn’t help them in the points department. The OL has been upgrade and a healthy Griffin has a new toy in DeSean Jackson, while the running game will be good once again. I can see this team putting up at least 25 ppg this year. The defense will be improved this year as well, but they still have a ways to go to be a top 10 defense. They have some nice additions on defense, but they also have some age on that side of the ball as well. Still if everyone meshes will this will be an improved unit. The Schedule is not too tough and it looks as if the skins had a good offseason. They will surely top last year’s 3 wins but Im not sure that they could get to the 8 wins that would put them over the win total. Ill call for a 6-10 year, but this team is on the right track.
