Saturday night college football and we will see the Utah State Aggies travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to take on the New Mexico Lobos. The game will be televised locally and has a start time of 9:00 pm (Eastern). Current Odds have Utah State listed as 10.5 point favorites, while the total sits at 52.
Analysis: The Utah State Aggies have lost back-to-back games for the first time since 2011, and they also had their 13-game conference win streak snapped by Boise State last Saturday in a 34-23 final at home. Prior to last weeks loss, Utah State too a 31-14 loss to BYU, in a game that saw them lose Chuckie Keeton for the season. Without Keeton vs Boise State The Aggies used two QB's to run the show. Craig Harrison made the start at quarterback and converted 7-of-17 passes for 105 yards, while being sacked twice. Backup signal caller Darell Garretson stepped in and hit on 9-of-14 passes for 116 yards and a score, but he too was sacked twice and had two INTs as well. The Aggies will need to call on their good defense more during the second half of the year, especially if the offense sputters. The Aggies are ranked 31st in total defense and they have allowed just 21.4 ppg on the year, which is also 31st in the nation.
As for the Lobos, they've come 0-2 in league play and 3-4 overall. A week after blowing the doors off rival New Mexico State (66-17), UNM fell right back into the loss column with a 38-31 defeat at the hands of Wyoming in Laramie last weekend. Generating 349.2 ypg on the ground, second-best in the country, is one way to attack defenses, but at the same time the Lobos are generating just 93.2 ypg through the air, second-worst among all FBS programs. The Lobos have certainly seen better days when it comes to their defense, allowing 239.2 ypg on the ground and 478.5 ypg overall to rank 115th in the country in both categories. The scoring defense has taken a major hit as a result, displaying 36.0 ppg allowed which is tied for 108th in the nation.
Pick: I will be going with the Over in this one. The Lobos defense is very poor and that should allow this Utah State offense to put some points on the board here. The Lobo offense can score some points and should be able to put up at least 21 in this one, while the Aggies put up 30+ of their own. This one should be played in the mid 50's, at least.
