Two perennial pigskin powers, Oklahoma and LSU, are today’s 5Dimes USA Today Final Poll College Football Odds pairing. The two schools, which have 10 national championships between them, are both expected to be BCS title contenders this season; however, 5Dimes anticipates LSU finishing higher in the USA Today Final Poll. The Tigers are a 5/9 favorite ($180 to win $100) to close out the season with a higher Coaches’ poll point total than the Sooners. Oklahoma is drawing 7/5 odds ($100 to win $140) to finish ahead of LSU in the prestigious poll.
Oklahoma was a major disappointment last season, despite reaching double digit wins for the eighth time in the last 10 years. The Sooners were thought by many to have National Championship talent, but the results proved different as they placed fourth in the Big 12 standings with a 6-3 conference record.
Last year’s finish did little to dampen the excitement coming out of Norman this spring as Bob Stoops returns 15 starters, including quarterback Landry Jones (4,463 yards and 29 touchdowns last season). The Sooners difficult but manageable schedule has pundits and odds makers (6-1 odds to win BCS National Championship) alike predicting big things for Oklahoma in 2012.
OU meets a host of tough conference opponents, including Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas, West Virginia, and TCU, but they get two of those five teams at home (K-State, Oklahoma State) and one, Texas, at a neutral site, setting up the possibility for a one or two loss season.
LSU also figures to be in the national title mix (13/5 play to win the BCS National Championship) with 13 starters and 43 lettermen back from last year’s 13-1 team. The Tigers, like the Sooners, face a difficult road with teams like Auburn, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas filling out the schedule.
While LSU fans may be expecting another undefeated regular season, that possibility seems a bit far fetched given the team’s list of capable adversaries. The Tigers look like an elite team on paper, but the Sooners may have a better opportunity to score big on the field and in the polls.
