A light heavyweight battle between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Ultimate Fighter I finalist Stephan Bonnar is the headliner in tonight’s UFC 153 pay per event. Start time for this evening’s fight card, which will take place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is set at 10:00pm ET. While Anderson Silva’s belt may not be on the line tonight, his reputation as MMA’s most feared fighter could be up for grabs. That may seem like an absurd notion, but a stunning loss for Silva this evening would, no doubt, propel Jon Jones to the top of the pound for pound heap.
Silva and his camp are probably not sweating it, though. The guy has never lost a UFC fight and he carries a 16 fight win streak into tonight’s scrap. This is not Silva’s first foray into the light heavyweight division either. The highly decorated Brazilian downed James Irvin by first round knockout in July of 2008 and he embarrassed former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in similar fashion almost a year later at UFC 101.
Nonetheless, the tough as nails Stephan Bonnar, despite the long odds, does represent a threat this evening. Bonnar, who is 15-7 as a professional, is in the midst of a career resurgence, having rebounded from a potentially career ending three fight losing streak with three consecutive wins.
Bonnar, who has never been knocked out in a professional fight, will not be intimidated by Silva either. The Indiana native, who helped popularize the sport with his epic TUF I battle opposite the aforementioned Griffin, has faced some of the UFC’s toughest fighters, including Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, and Jon Jones.
As is usually the case with these types of fights, the underdog is the only play, unless, of course, one were to parlay Silva with two or three other fighters.
