The 2013 Tulsa football schedule, includes road trips to Bowling Green and Oklahoma in 2 of their first 3 games of the year. The Golden Hurricane also have road games vs ECU and LA Tech, plus home games vs Rice and Marshall within Conference USA. Their full schedule is listed below, but first let's preview the 2013 Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa is the defending Champs of Conference USA and they will be in the mix again to be in the Conference USA Title game again. The hurdle for them may be the fact that they return just 10 starters overall, including just 3 on defense.
The offense ranked among the best in C-USA last season and Cody Green returns at QB to lead the Golden Hurricane. Also back in the mix are top two RBs, both of who finished with over 900 yards on the ground last year. The ground game put up 246 ypg and 5 ypc last year and should be just as good this year. WR should also be a strength for this team as they return 4 of their top 5 pass caters from a year ago. The lone weakness on this team is the OL where they lose 3 starters, and three of their OL starters have a combined 18 starts. This will be a green unit and could keep them from topping last years 34.7 ppg they put up.
The defense has big question marks for Tulsa. Last year they set a school record for sacks, with 53, but it will be very hard to duplicate that with just 3 starters back this year. Overall Tulsa was ranked 35th in total defense last year and they do return safety Marco Nelson who had 80 tackles and 2 INT's last year. Linebacker Shawn Jackson will likely be the leader on defense. Last year he missed the first three games yet was still able to rank third on the team in total tackles with 88, and is fifth on the team with five sacks. The DL will be totally a work in progress as they must replace all 4 starters from a year ago.
Road games vs Bowling Green and Oklahoma, in their first 3 weeks of action will not help this team get off to a good start, especially with very inexperienced lines on both sides of the ball. Conference USA is going to be a high powered conference and you will need some sort of defense to survive. They will win some of their games on offenses alone, but in the end I feel they just don't have enough defense this year. I expect them to fight with Rice for the West Division title, but in the end it will be the Owls in the title game. Key Trends: 10-2 ATS with rest... 1-5 ATS before Tulane... 7-1 ATS as home favs vs a .500 or better opponent that's off a SU win.
