Matt Campbell took over a Toledo team last year that returned just eight starters, but he did inherit a program in pretty good shape. The Rockets qualified for bowls in 2010 and 2011 and Campbell even guided the team to its ninth win of the 2011 season after serving as interim head coach in a 42-41 Military Bowl victory over Air Force. Campbell's first year on the sidelines saw the team win nine games as well with the Rockets finishing up at 9-4. Toledo went 6-2 in league play, falling only to Ball State and eventual MAC Champion Northern Illinois. Despite Toledo's strong 2012 campaign and the return of nine offensive starters, it is a sixth choice to win the conference (+1100 odds) and a third pick, behind Northern Illinois and Ball State, to win the MAC West (+500 odds). 2013 College Football Predictions from 5Dimes also have the Rockets favored to win fewer than 8.5 games at -260 odds ($260 wins $100).
Toledo should field another strong team this season, but its schedule may stand in the way of mid-major greatness. The Rockets non-conference slate features road games at Florida and Missouri and, while they do host the Huskies of Northern Illinois, they must travel to Ball State and Bowling Green. Toledo will be lined as a dog in each of those five contests.
