Toledo and Arizona will open their respective seasons opposite each other tonight at Arizona Stadium in Tucson. This evening’s clash between the MAC and PAC 12 has a scheduled start time of 10:30pm ET on ESPNU. Toledo at Arizona Odds have the hosting Wildcats listed as a -11 against the spread favorite while the Rockets are drawing +330 moneyline odds ($100 to win $330) to spoil Rich Rodriguez head coaching debut at Arizona. Tonight’s game total is set at 62 points.

The only thing Arizona needs to make this evening’s season opener more special is a drunken David Hasselhoff cavorting in the student section. Hasselhoff or no, the school is hoping tonight represents a change of course for its football program, which produced just three winning seasons during Mike Stoops eight year tenure.

New head coach Rich Rodriguez is also hoping to turn a page or two at Arizona as his brief time at Michigan nearly soiled his reputation as a good coach. Rodriguez may find the roster and lack of football tradition at Arizona better suited to his offensive approach, making the prospects of a successful stay in Tucson more likely.

While Rodriguez did not inherit a great deal in the way of experience at the skill positions, he does have an offensive line that returns all five starters from last season. He also has a quarterback in senior Matt Scott who appears suited for the spread offense.

Tonight should provide a good opportunity for the Wildcats to work out any early season kinks as Toledo, a 9-4 team last season, returns just four starters from a defense that allowed 31.7 points and 402 yards per game in 2011.

The Rockets are also operating under a new head coach with offensive coordinator Matt Campbell taking over for Tim Beckman (Illinois). Campbell lost seven starters from last season’s potent offense, but Toledo should still pose a threat to opposing defenses with quarterback Terrence Owens still at the controls. Owens completed over 70 percent of his passes last season while throwing 18 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
