Thursday Major League Baseball San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers play host to the San Diego Padres in matinee Major League Baseball action today. The baseball betting odds for the game have the Brewers listed as a favorite to pick up the win at home today.

Milwaukee has not been very good this season and now find themselves 17 games under the .500 mark and completely out of any race. San Diego has also struggled this season after going all-in during the off season. The Padres weren't sellers at the deadline like many thought they would, now they have their sights set on the future and trying to salvage this season anyway they can.

Today the Brewers are aiming to win their third straight games over San Diego to end the series after getting beat up in a 13-5 loss earlier this week. Matt Garza will get the ball for the Brew Crew in this one, he's had a less than positive season with a 5-12 mark and a 5.17 ERA. Garza has lost both of his last two starts, giving up just three runs in each contest.

His split lines aren't great either as Garza has lost seven games this season in 10 starts at home. He's picked up just two victories during that time and has a 4.18 ERA in those contests. Current Padres are hitting .210 against Garza, collecting 13 hits in 62 at bats. Melvin Upton Jr. has homered while Clint Barmes has two home runs in 15 career at bats.

The Padres are giving the ball to Odrisamer Despaigne. He's 5-7 with a 4.75 ERA this season but has won his last two starts, both coming against the Miami Marlins. He allowed just four combined earned runs in those games and looked solid in both starts. The Brewers have had minimal at bats (13) against him, with Elian Herrera owning the only two hits against him.

Despaigne has some close numbers this season, sporting a 4.88 ERA on the road and a 4.64 ERA at home. Part of the reason for his struggles have been inconsistencies at getting guys out — Despaigne has thrown 102 1/3 innings this year and given up 102 hits.

This is a tough pitching matchup to gauge with both struggling guys coming in. There could be some runs scored in this one.

Vegas betting expert Steve Fezzik doesn’t expect the bad situation in Oakland to get much better this season. This AFC West team may have some improvements in terms of personnel, but Jack Del Rio is the latest in a carousel of ever-changing mediocre coaches, and Fezzik doesn’t expect he is the guy to turn this team around. He also thinks people are overstating Derek Carr’s abilities at quarterback, as he may do well in the fourth quarter, but his numbers are padded with garbage time performance.
