Thursday College Football Arizona Wildcats vs UTSA Roadrunners

Thursday night College football and we will see the Arizona Wildcats take on the UTSA Roadrunners at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The game has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on Fox Sports 1 Current Vegas odds have the Wildcats listed as 7 point favorites, while the total is set at 56.

Analysis: The Arizona Wildcats are off a pair of 8-5 season in Rich Rodriguez’ first two year at the helm and that now gives this team 5 winning years in the last 6, but still no more than 8 wins in a year. The Wildcats had an impressive opening win, as they beat the UNLV Rebels by a 58-13 score. The Wildcats were most impressive on the offensive side of the ball, where they racked up 787 yards of total offense, which was the highest output of any team in the nation during week 1. Anu Solomon was very solid with 425 yards passing. 4 TDs and no INTs. Also impressive were Terris Jones-Grigsby and Nick Wilson, who each had 100+ yards on the ground and 1 TD, while Austin Hill and Samajie Grant each had 100+ yards receiving and a TD. The defense for the team was solid, allowing just 13 points, 3.8 yards per carry and 4 of 15 on 3rd downs (27%).

This will be just the 4th year of FBS football for the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners and they come in off an 8-4 season in 2012 and a 7-5 season last year. This year HC Larry Coker will have his best team year as they return 55 lettermen, including 20 starters, which makes them the most experienced team in the nation. That experience was on display in their opening win vs a very good Houston squad. The offense did struggle some for this team, as they put up just 263 yards overall, including just 121 through the air. The defense was very solid vs a strong Houston attack, allowing the cougars just 213 yards of total offense, including -21 yards rushing. The DL has all 4 starters back with all 4 being seniors and clearly showed why they are the strength on this side of the ball.

Pick:  UTSA is a team that I will be high on this year, but I feel they are up against in this one. Last week they were off a big revenge win over Houston and have a big revenge game on deck at Oklahoma State. Yes this is their home opener, but still it is a tough sandwich game for them. They will also be facing a team with much more speed on both sides of the ball than they did last week and Im not sure they will be ready for that. Arizona comes in with an explosive offense, while their defense looks like it should be a very formidable group this year. Even though UTSA put up 27 points in last weeks game they did so on just 263 yards of total offense. That will not get it done vs the Wildcats in this one. UTSA has a fine defense but they just won make enough stops and their offense won't put up enough points to keep this one within a TD. Arizona should take this one by double digits.
