After an unprecedented 5-7 campaign in 2010 (at least for the Mack Brown era), Texas rebounded with an 8-5 season that included a Holiday Bowl win over California. The Longhorns were far removed from any sort of national title talk, though; something they hope will change this year. According to the latest Texas Longhorns 2013 BCS National Championship Odds, that wish may come true. While Texas is not a favorite to win it all, it is being viewed as a potential BCS National Championship candidate at 28-1 odds. The Longhorns are also a second pick to win the Big 12 conference at 57-20 odds ($100 to win $285).
The 2010 season was an ugly the size of Texas for Mack Brown’s team as it posted a 5-7 record in the absence of quarterback Colt McCoy. The Longhorns dropped five of their last six games and failed to make a bowl appearance for the first time since 1997. Last season, while still not up to Texas’ recent standards, served as a rebound with the team reaching eight wins after a 21-10 postseason victory over the California Golden Bears.
Fans and odds makers alike are expecting even more from the Longhorns in 2012 as the team returns 17 starters, including 10 from an offense that showed marked improvement from the disaster that was 2010 (23.8 ppg to 28.1 ppg). Texas’ schedule could prove problematic to all the Longhorns resurgence talk, though. Brown’s crew has difficult road games against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Kansas State and its annual neutral site meeting with Oklahoma is anything but a given. Texas also plays host to two quality opponents in Big 12 newcomers West Virginia and TCU.
Texas Longhorns 2012 Schedule: 9/1 Wyoming, 9/8 New Mexico, 9/15 at Ole Miss, 9/29 at Oklahoma State, 10/6 West Virginia, 10/13 Oklahoma (neutral site), 10/20 Baylor, 10/27 at Kansas, 11/3 at Texas Tech, 11/10 Iowa State, 11/24 TCU, 11/1 at Kansas State
