Analysis: The New York Yankees are on the verge of finishing last in the majors in runs scored for the month of June and have shown no sign they are about to break out of the collective slump. The Yankees will be looking to avoid a three-game sweep when they visit the Baltimore Orioles again tonight. New York has been forced to use several different lineups due to injury and trotted out one that featured Vernon Wells batting cleanup in Saturday’s 11-3 loss. Wells is batting .137 in June and, like many others who carried the offense in the beginning of the season, has declined steadily since a hot start. Hiroki Kuroda has posted three straight quality starts but has earned only one win in that span due to some poor support. The veteran right-hander allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits in 6 2/3 innings against Texas on Tuesday but did not factor in the decision. Kuroda lasted only two innings at Baltimore on May 22, getting knocked around for five runs on eight hits to absorb a loss.
The Orioles have won three straight to move into second place in the American League East. The Baltimore Orioles have won seven straight starts by Chris Tillman. Adding Brian Roberts back to their lineup can only enhance their chances of making it eight in a row. Tillman will be on the mound and Roberts will play for the first time since the season's first week when the Orioles try for their first three-game sweep of the New York Yankees in over eight years Sunday night at home. Tillman (9-2, 3.72 ERA) improved to 6-0 with a 3.98 ERA over his last seven outings as he allowed three runs over seven innings in Tuesday's 6-3 victory over Cleveland to capture his fifth straight start. He's bidding to become the first Oriole to win six games in a month since Rodrigo Lopez in July 2002. The right-hander has matched his career-high win total from last season. He hasn't faced the Yankees this year, and is 2-3 in seven starts against them with an 8.16 ERA - his second-worst against any AL opponent. Davis continued his season-long success versus New York with two homers and five RBIs in Saturday's 11-3 rout. He's the first in the majors to reach 30 homers and is 11 for 28 with four home runs against the Yankees in 2013.
Pick: I will be going with the Orioles in this one. The Yanks really look like they are running out of gas, offensively and just won't be able to put up enough runs to win vs a hot hitting Orioles team. Both starters are pitching very well right now, but the Yanks can't score as they have averaged just 3.2 rpg in their last 10 games, while the O's have put up 5.9 rpg over the same stretch. The O's should take this one and complete the sweep of the Yanks.
