The Stanford football program seems light years removed from its disastrous 1-11 2006 season. The Cardinal are coming off back-to-back double digit win seasons and they finished 11-2 last year after a 38-41 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl. However, despite the team’s recent exploits, the odds makers are anticipating a step back this season with the loss of quarterback Andrew Luck to the NFL. Stanford Cardinal 2012 Season Odds have the school listed at 250-1 odds to win the BCS National Championship. Stanford is a fifth pick, at 22-1 odds, to win the 2012 Pac 12 Championship and the third choice to top the conference’s North Division at 10-1 odds.
Certainly Stanford lost a great deal over the off-season with Luck and the top three receiving threats from last season’s 11 win team moving on. However, Cardinal Head Coach David Shaw does return 13 starters and 61 lettermen to Palo Alto. In other words, while Stanford may not meet the standard set over the past two seasons, it is not devoid of talent or the ability to win the majority of its games.
The Cardinal do have a difficult schedule, though, with road games at Washington, Notre Dame, California, Oregon, and UCLA. The odds makers have Stanford listed as dog in two of those contests (Notre Dame +5, Oregon +13) and in a September 15th home meeting with USC (+7.5). In the only other lined Stanford game, the Cardinal are favored by four against Bay Area rival Cal.
