Last year was a good one for South Carolina as it put together its best season yet under the direction of Steve Spurrier. Book makers are expecting the Gamecocks upward trend to continue this season as the latest South Carolina Gamecocks 2013 BCS National Championship Odds have Spurrier’s squad listed at 35-1 to win the national title. South Carolina is also expected to challenge for the SEC and SEC East crowns. The Gamecocks are drawing 10-1 odds to win the conference and 5-2 odds to usurp last season’s first place finisher, Georgia, in the division standings.
South Carolina posted an 11-2 record last year which just so happened to be the best mark in the history of the school’s football program. While a notable and impressive feat, it could be argued the Gamecocks were spared, in some regard, by avoiding both Alabama and LSU. Still, South Carolina earned wins over the likes of Georgia, Florida, and Clemson, and it closed out play with a 30-13 thrashing of Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.
The Gamecocks are certainly poised for another big season with 14 starters and a healthy Marcus Lattimore returning to the fold; however, 11 wins may be a bit of a stretch. Spurrier’s troops face difficult roads game at LSU, Florida, and Clemson, and their home slate includes meetings with Missouri, Georgia, and Arkansas.
