South Carolina recorded its first ever 11 win season last year, but it still failed to win the SEC East, despite topping eventual winner Georgia 45-42 in Athens. If the latest South Carolina 2012 College Football Predictions are any indication, the Gamecocks will fall short of an SEC title game this season as well. Steve Spurrier’s squad, which is favored at -185 odds ($185 to win $100) to win fewer than nine games, is drawing +255 odds to win its division and +1250 odds to take the conference title. South Carolina’s 2013 BCS Odds are presently set at +4600 ($100 to win $4600).
South Carolina is considered one of the country’s top football teams as evidenced by its No. 9 debut in both the AP and Coaches’ Polls. However, the odds makers envision the Gamecocks struggling to match last season’s 11 wins.
Two factors are playing into doubts about whether or not Spurrier can help his team reach double digit wins for a second consecutive season and both are legitimate concerns.
First off, the Gamecocks lost 11 starters in the off-season, including big time talents in Alshon Jeffery, Melvin Ingram, and Stephon Gilmore. Secondly, SC faces a brutal schedule as it hosts quality teams in Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee while facing road games against capable to great teams in Vanderbilt, LSU, Florida, and Clemson.
The Gamecocks are listed as an underdog in five of those games (Georgia, LSU, Florida, Arkansas, and Clemson), making eight wins a realistic possibility.
