Analysis: Colorado, which is 3 1/2 games behind Arizona and tied for second with Los Angeles, began a 10-game road trip which will take it to the break by absorbing its seventh shutout this season, and second in four days. The Rockies hope to have Carlos Gonzalez back in the lineup after he missed Friday's game with a back injury. Gonzalez, who has 23 homers and 62 RBIs, took batting practice Friday, but manager Walt Weiss decided to give him the night off. Gonzalez, however, is batting .145 (8 for 55) with two homers in his past 16 games against the Diamondbacks and has one single in his last six at-bats against Miley. After going 8-1 at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season, Drew Pomeranz was rudely welcomed back to the major leagues by San Francisco on Sunday. The 24-year-old Collierville, Tenn., native yielded four runs and seven hits - including two home runs - in 4 1/3 innings of a 5-2 loss. Pomeranz, who was acquired in 2011 from Cleveland in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade, is 0-1 with a 8.03 ERA in three career starts against Arizona, while Gerardo Parra is 3-for-6 with a home run against him.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will try for their fourth straight victory when they host the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Arizona, the only team in the National League West with a winning record (45-41), began a stretch in which it will play 17 of its next 22 games at home with a 5-0 victory over Colorado on Friday. Arizona has a chance to strengthen its grip on the West with a 10-game homestand heading into the All-Star break, including three with the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers starting Monday. An Arizona starter won for only the second time in the last 26 games (2-11) when rookie Tyler Skaggs limited Colorado to three hits in eight innings Friday. Wade Miley didn't allow a run, but yielded six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings in Arizona's 5-4 loss to the Mets on Monday. The 26-year-old Hammond, La., native hasn't won since June 5 while going 0-2 in his last five starts. Miley faced Colorado on April 27 when he yielded four hits and seven walks in 4 1/3 shutout innings and is 4-0 in seven games (six starts) with a 2.79 ERA against the Rockies, but has struggled against Wilin Rosario (5-for-11, home run, double).
Pick: I am all over the D-Backs here. Even if CarGo plays, he still has bad recent numbers vs the D-Backs and the Rockie offense as a whole will continue to struggle as long as Tulowitzki and Fowler are out. Wade Miley hasn't pitched well at home, but he has pitched very good overall of late, allowing no more than 3 ER's in each of his last 6 starts, plus he is 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 6 starts vs the Rockies, including 3-0 with 2.07 ERA in 4 career home starts vs them. Drew Pomeranz was hit hard in his lone starts this year and he is 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA in 3 career starts vs the D-Backs. Look for Arizona to take game 2 here.
