Missouri will look to lock up its eighth consecutive bowl bid tonight when it plays host to the Syracuse Orange at Faurot Field in Columbia. Missouri has experienced a tumultuous first season as a member of the SEC, but it can still secure a postseason appearance with a win this evening. The Tigers evened their record at 5-5 last weekend with a dramatic quadruple overtime victory at Tennessee, which means they will need to avoid an emotional letdown today against a non-conference opponent.
Mizzou must also face the Orange without their best player, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. The star lineman was suspended earlier this week for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Neither of those things bode particularly well for the Tigers nor does a Syracuse team that is better than most people know. The Orange sport the same 5-5 record as Mizzou, but Doug Marrone’s troops have earned three of those victories in their last four games. Syracuse latest outing featured a 45-26 shellacking of previously undefeated Big East leader Louisville at the Carrier Dome.
Granted, the Orange’s schedule has not been as strong as Missouri’s arduous SEC slate, but this team’s recent success is no aberration. If Missouri plays the same kind of sloppy, mistake prone football it has exhibited on numerous occasions this season, Syracuse is more than capable of stealing this game.
