The Arkansas State Red Wolves travel to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Saturday College Football action. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm EST start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The odds for the game definitely favor Nebraska as the Huskers are 22-point favorites.
Nebraska enters today's game against Arkansas State with a 1-1 record overall. The Huskers beat up on Southern Miss to open the season but weren't able to win on the West Coast in their game last week at UCLA, dropping that contest by a touchdown. Now Bo Pelini's squad returns to Lincoln with an Arkansas State team coming to town that has new coach Gus Malzahn looking for a staple win for the program in just his third game at the helm.
The Red Wolves are also 1-1 (both clubs equally 1-1 ATS, too) but their lone loss was in the opening week of the season to Oregon on the road. Sure, they gave up nearly 60 points in that game and really let the Ducks starters do whatever they wanted, but Malzahn's squad was still able to score 34 points. I don't care even if it's the backups at Oregon, Arkansas State players are not the same calibre as what Chip Kelly has up there in Eugene. If you are a person that likes to look at trends in college football games, here is one to chew on: Nebraska is typically favored by a lot of points at home when they play inferior opponents. Not to bash on Arky State at all in this one just yet, but they aren't Nebraska. Yet, the Cornhuskers are 0-6 in their last six games when they are favored by more than 21 points during the last three years. Today they're favored by 22 points, so by past occurrences they probably aren't going to cover in this game. I know that doesn't always mean anything when it comes to college football, but it's at least something to consider.
Here's another thing to look at: Nebraska's patented "Black Shirt" defense is more or less gone. The Huskers have given up an average of 400+ yards per game in their last seven outings, which isn't good. Arkansas State comes in averaging more than 33 points per game and converted for 33 first downs last week in a win over Memphis. Both are very interesting, indeed.
This game is on national television and Nebraska is at home. Arkansas State can put points on the board and if they are going to play well in a game, why not do it on national television on the road? I know that's really no reason to back them, but some of the numbers already presented here give us some reason to fade on Nebraska.
