Arizona State ventures into enemy territory this afternoon as it faces No. 19 USC at the Los Angeles Coliseum (3:00pm ET start time, Pac-12 Network). USC opened the season as the top ranked team in the nation, but it has fallen far short of expectations. Stanford all but ended Southern Cal’s national title hopes in week three, unsetting SC 21-14 in Palo Alto, but the last two weeks have put its Pac-12 South and Pac-12 championship hopes in doubt.
The Trojans suffered a completely unexpected 39-36 road loss at Arizona on October 27th before returning home to fall 62-51 to Oregon last weekend.
The possibility of a three game losing streak seemed utterly preposterous for this team coming into the season, but it certainly exists with a game Sun Devils squad in the offing.
Arizona State has fallen off of late, losing three straight to Oregon, UCLA, and Oregon State, but it proved a worthy challenger in each of those setbacks with the exception of the Oregon game.
The Sun Devils offense is averaging 37.6 points per game on the season, and it should be able to find the end zone with relative ease this afternoon. USC was supposed to field one of the nation’s top defensive units, but it has struggled on numerous occasions this season and it would not be a surprise to see it flounder today.
The Trojans have enough offensive firepower to stay on top of Arizona State, but this game could be closer than expected, especially if USC is in any way feeling sorry for itself.
