Free Analysis: The San Francisco Giants attempt to complete a four-game sweep and capture their second World Series championship in three years Sunday, when they take on the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. San Francisco, which faced elimination six times this postseason, has put Detroit in a similar position after posting back-to-back 2-0 victories. The Giants became the first team to record consecutive shutouts in the World Series since 1966, when the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers three straight times. San Francisco has won six straight games since being down 3-1 in the NLCS, outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 32 to 4, including four victories by shutout. Ace Matt Cain will look to slam the door on Detroit tonight. The Giants are 10-4 in Cain's past 14 starts including a 9-0 win in the NLCS Game 7 clincher behind 5.2 shutout innings from Cain. The 28-year-old went 1-2 while allowing three runs in each of his previous three playoff starts. Cain, who was 8-2 in 17 regular-season road outings and has gone 1-1 away from home this postseason, has never faced Detroit in his career.
After sweeping the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, the Tigers sat for five days while waiting for their next opponent. The layoff has affected them offensively as they have scored only three runs over the first three games of the series and have registered a total of seven hits over the last two contests. Detroit sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder have gone a combined 3-for-19. The Tigers now look to join the 2004 Boston Red Sox as the only teams in major-league history to overcome a 3-0 playoff series deficit. Boston accomplished the feat against the Yankees in the ALCS. Looking to stop the bleeding for Detroit tonight will be Max Scherzer. Scherzer (17-7, 3.58 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) has led his team to a 22-12 record (.647) in his 34 starts in 2012. This includes an 11-4 mark at Comerica Park, where he is personally 8-3 with a 3.39 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a ridiculous 116 strikeouts over 87.2 innings (11.9 K's/9). In two postseason starts, he's allowed just one earned run in 11 innings with 18 strikeouts and just three walks. For his playoff career, he is 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in six games (five starts, one in relief). Sunday will mark his fifth career start against the Giants, having gone 1-3 with a 5.12 ERA and 1.40 WHIP against them. Detroit was shut out only twice during the regular season. It has been blanked three times already this postseason.
Free Pick: I will go with the Under in this one. Matt Cain has been special for the Giants with a 2.86 ERA on the year and a 3.00 ERA in his last 3 starts. Tonight he should have an easy task vs a Detroit team that has scored just 3 total runs in the series so far. The San Fran offense hasn't been that great in the last two games as they have put up just 2 runs in each game. Max Scherzer has a .60 ERA in his last 3 starts and at home this year he had a solid 3.39 ERA with 116 strikeouts. Max knows he must have a big game and with both offenses struggling i will look for another low scoring game here.
