San Francisco proved to be the league’s biggest surprise last year, finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record before working its way to an NFC Championship Game appearance opposite the Giants. Based upon the latest San Francisco 49ers 2012 NFL Predictions and Super Bowl Odds, Jim Harbaugh’s crew will not sneak up on anyone this fall. The Niners are a top three pick to win Super Bowl XLVII at 6/1 odds ($100 to win $600) and they are a 2/5 favorite ($250 to win $100) to repeat as NFC West champions. San Francisco is also expected to reach double digit wins again, presently drawing -155 odds ($155 to win $100) to finish Over 9.5 victories (Under 9.5 +125).
San Francisco fielded one of the league’s best defenses last season, ranking second in points per game allowed (14.3) and fourth in yards per game allowed (308.2), and it figures to be one of the top units, once again, in 2012. The 49ers offense was not as dynamic, finishing 26th in yards per game, but efficiency was a hallmark as it ranked 11th in points per game with a 23.8 average.
Quarterback Alex Smith turned things around under the direction of Harbaugh, a development which would seemingly produce even more dividends this season. However, the odds makers envision the team taking a step back, at least in terms of wins.
Cantor Gaming of Las Vegas has the 49ers favored in 10 of the 15 San Francisco games for which it has issued points spreads. Perhaps the new first place schedule has something to do with that as Smith and company face teams like the Packers, Lions, Jets, Giants, Bears, Saints, and Patriots outside of division play.
