The San Diego Chargers needed some luck vs a Kansas City team that was resting their starters to get into the playoffs, but thanks to a 27-24 OT win they did just that. Now the Chargers enter the playoffs with 17/1 Odds to win the AFC and 40/1 odds to win the Super Bowl, which is the worst odds of all the playoff teams.
The Chargers had all the dominoes fall their way heading in to their game vs the Chief, as both the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins lost their games earlier in the day. Then San Diego took on a Kansas City team that was playing just one starter in the game. Easy win for the Bolts, right? Not so fast as the Chiefs backups played their hearts out and could have won won the game in regulation, but a missed FG by Ryan Succop at the end of regulation gave the Chargers new life and they eventually won the game in OT.
The win propels the Chargers into a matchup with AFC North champion Cincinnati in the wild card round on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1:05 p.m. ET. San Diego is currently listed as 7 points dogs in the game while the total is at 46. San Diego did face the Bengals earlier this year, but that game was at home and they lost 17-10.
The Chargers come into the game having been in playoff mode for the last 4 weeks as they were 5-7 at one point and needed to win their last 4 games to get in to the post season. That should give this team a little edge, plus they also have confidence after beating both Kansas City and Denver on the road this year.
Now there is a fun fact about the Chargers Super Bowl chances, as the last 4 teams that were the Philadelphia Eagles home opening opponent have gone on to win the Super Bowl. The previous four teams to open there? The New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens. Whether the Bolts make it that far or not this has still been a step in the right direction for this proud franchise.
