CFB Saturday and we will see the Oregon State Beavers travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes. The start time is 10:00 pm (Eastern) and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Current Odds have Utah listed as 3 point favorites, while the total sits at 57.
Analysis: The Oregon State Beavers started out their year in horrible fashion, as they lost to FCS foe Eastern Washington in their opener, but they did bounce back with a 33-14 win over Hawaii last week. The Beavers had such high hopes for this year so the loss to Eastern Washington was a shock. The problems for the Beavers this year have not been because of their offense as the Beavers have already amassed 1035 yards of total offense so far. Sean Mannion leads the offense and has thrown for 300+ yards twice this year, after completing 31-of-43 pass attempts for 372 yards and four touchdowns against Hawaii. That was the 5th tine in his career that he threw for 350+ yards. The Beavers do need more balance on offense as they have run for just 162 yards total in their first 2 games. Riley got his defense to take a step forward in week two when the Beavers allowed just 239 yards, holding Hawaii to just a 1-of-11 success rate on third down. However, Oregon State is still second to last in the Pac-12 in total defense (432 ypg).
The Utah Utes are 2-0 to start the year. The Utes took care of instate rival Utah State, 30-26, in the season opener and then rolled over Weber State, 70-7 last week. The Utes are averaging 50 points and 539 yards of offense each game, but those numbers have been heavily inflated by the 70-7 stomping the Utes put on the Wildcats. If Travis Wilson keeps throwing the ball the way he has through the first two games, the Utes' offensive trend could continue its upward surge. Wilson has completed 31-of-47 pass attempts for 566 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Three different receivers have reached the century mark in terms of receiving yards, while the running game has been spread out with 5 players getting at least 10 carries this year so far. Defensively, Utah has done a good job of getting in the backfield, with nine sacks as a team. Leading the way in that regard is Tenny Palepoi, who has 2.5 quarterback takedowns. The Utes are opening their season with three straight home games for the first time since 1970.
Pick: I like the Utes in this one. Oregon State has a lot of players back from last year, but this team is not playing well at all, especially on defense, where they have allowed 432 ypg overall, including 309 ypg through the air. The offense is ok but they just can't stop anyone. Now they take on a Utah team that is playing with confidence, having put up 70 points last week, while averaging 50 ppg and 296 ypg through the air so far. Unlike the Beavers, the Utes do play some defense as they have allowed just 16.5 ppg so far. Utah is an improved team and on a mission to make it back to a bowl. OSU has a good offense, but just way too weak on defense to take this game. I look for the Utes to win by at least a TD in this one.
